JABBERWOCKY

Poem Animation

A typographic animation of the poem Jabberwocky by Lewis Carroll.

The challenge for this project was to create a visual representation of the poem by only using the words in the poem, no imagery or graphics. I used one typeface throughout for consistency, and used italics only when someone was speaking, to differentiate that voice in the poem. Otherwise I relied on shaping and sizing the words differently, and the orientation of the words to one another. The project started out digitally (I shaped the stanzas in InDesign), then was printed and taped onto receipt paper, pulled down a track, and digitally captured on video with minor edits in Premiere. The timing of the stanzas in the frame was all done manually while the paper was pulled down the track.

Process

The set up for the filming of the poem. The printed stanzas are taped to receipt paper using a cat toy as an axel to pull the paper smoothly down. I taped pens to the wall to act as a gate to hold the paper flat so it stayed in focus throughout the filming.
