KOYAANISQATSI

Movie Poster

I redesigned a poster for the film Koyaanisqatsi, using multiple Photoshop tools to make separate film stills come together.

I took scenes that were representative of the film arc as a whole and used those to create the primary poster. I took photos of the computer screen playing the film and used Photoshop to manipulate the film scenes to make them into the poster. Specifically I used the clone stamp tool to extend the shot of the collapsing buildings further above where the original shot had ended. I used gradient masks to blend the different images into one another, and used the clone stamp tool and color adjustments to change the background of one film scene to match another.

I created two additional posters for the movie using more scenes from the film, and put the three posters in an order that showed a larger arc of the film, from the rocket launching to falling, with a middle panel showing the similarities the film points out between human industrial operations and humans moving in cities. I created a modern day museum exhibit as a way to have a contemporary ad campaign for the film, which originally came out in 1983. The museum exhibit is for a 40th anniversary behind the scenes experience of the film. I created a subway billboard, a flag pole pair of banners, and banners at the front of the museum as advertising for the exhibit.
